Dr. Joseph K. Wong is one of Toronto's leading facial plastic surgeons. In 2001, he was awarded the Ontario Medal of Good Citizenship by the Government of Ontario for his numerous contributions to the community.
Dr. Wong also received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award during her visit to Canada in 2002.
University of Toronto - Graduate in MedicineA graduate in Medicine from the University of Toronto, Dr. Wong then specialized in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery and Facial Plastic Surgery.
After acquiring his certification of Specialist in Canada and the United States, he did a fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with Professor T. Onizuka who was the chairman of the Japanese Plastic Reconstructive Surgery Society in Tokyo.
Dr. Wong was subsequently certified in the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
He is also Board certified and a life fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Breast Surgery.
He is a fellow of the Department of Plastic Surgery, Showa University, Japan, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Canadian Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Among the numerous memberships and honorary positions held in major medical societies, Dr. Wong is also the President of the Canadian Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1997-2003) and is the Canadian director of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
In addition he is one of the founding directors representing Canada in establishing the International Federation of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Internationally recognized for his academic excellence, Dr. Wong was invited to join the editorial board of the prestigious medical journal, the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, one of the two Canadians to have that honour.
Recognized for his surgical expertise, Dr. Wong also teaches advanced techniques to residents and other surgeons. He frequently lectures at meetings and has also taught at the soft tissue workshop in facial plastic surgery for the University of Toronto.
Dr. Wong's clinic has also become a teaching centre for plastic surgeons around the world who want to observe Dr. Wong's surgical skill.
In 1986, for a one month period, he shared his surgical knowledge at Shanghai's Cancer Hospital. In 1989, Dr. Wong provided a month of voluntary surgical service in Kenya, Africa. In 2001, Dr. Wong started a committee based in Toronto to organize humanitarian volunteering surgical missions to the remote areas of China to perform facial reconstructive surgeries for children with facial deformities. Dr. Wong has led surgical teams to perform cleft-lip and palate repairs for under-privileged children in the remote areas of China in 2001 and 2002.
For Dr. Wong, cosmetic surgery is not just a science, but an art. His life-long devotion to artistic endeavours has provided him with a well-honed aesthetic vision.
With a deep interest in calligraphy and an award-winning flutist, Dr. Wong has served as honorable chairman of the Toronto Chinese Artists' Association.
